Logan District Christmas Party

Hi Everyone,

We had a wonderful Logan District U3A Christmas Party today.

Once again, the fabulous Ukulele Group entertained us in a couple of brackets performing their favourite songs. This year we even had the lyrics displayed on the screen so the audience could sing along.

Jean entertained us with some hilarious limericks, like this one:

Said Hamlet to Ophelia,
I'll draw a sketch of thee,

What kind of pencil shall I use?

2B or not 2B?

and she screened some pictures of past and present activities in the Logan District.

The German Group performed some traditional German Christmas songs and a very funny song about a baby monkey who stole the coconut "Wer hat die Kokosnuss geklaut?"

We have fourteen new classes next term and some of the new tutors introduced themselves to us and outlined the courses they are going to teach next year,

The video club screened the class promos of those classes and groups who have participated so far. The club hopes to make more promos of other groups and classes next year.

The ladies from the Logan District Committee prepared and served great food for everyone. Coordinator Monika went to a lot of trouble to create some wonderful cakes for dessert.
The function was expertly compared by Kathy Roman.

There were over 100 guests in attendance

Erika's German Group entertained us with Christmas songs

P14 Videographers' Workshop

We had our first meeting this morning, admiring short videos members brought along for us to see. Then we got down to planning our first project, with the help of a group of amateur actors, a short movie called PEOPLE LIKE YOU, a one act play by Anjali Wagland, involving a couple in a coffee shop having an argument, involving the waiter.

At the same time, members will shoot a BEHIND THE SCENES movie to show at future meetings.

Vale Nick Bricknall

The Logan District Committee is very sad to inform you that Nick Bricknell passed away on Sunday, 27th September.  His warmth and enthusiasm captivated students during his classes on Mythology, Exploring English, Ideologies, Philosophy and Cartooning. Nick persisted despite illness and pain right up to Term 3 when he had planned another Cartooning class.  He was loved by his many students and will be greatly missed.

Nick's funeral service will be held on Thursday 11.00 - 11.30am at the Mt Gravatt Cemetery and Crematorium.

As a past student of one of Nick's classes, I can honestly say.

WE'LL MISS YOU, NICK.

Another couple of Class promos

Here are another couple of class promos for the Brisbane U3A website. Logan District is leading the way of the Brisbane U3A family in providing these promos for the Brisbane website. The idea is, when members of the public visit the U3A website to seek information about classes and groups, they can have a visual introduction to the actual class. The promos are produced by the members of the Videographers' Workshop group of the Logan District.

A Morning With Hugh

Wow, what  a coup. The History Class was able get renown Brisbane author Hugh Lunn to come and talk at the Logan North Library this morning, on the condition that it wouldn't be too early. No problems said Bryan, so the History Class swapped times with the Travel Group. Some members of that group then stayed on to listen to this very entertaining speaker.

Hugh told us about about his time in Vietnam, where he was a war correspondent for Reuters and his subsequent book about it, VIETNAM A Reporter's War. Of course, he mentioned his childhood and Catholic schooling and schoolboy adventures with his friends, as well as his home life with Fred and Olive and his siblings in that, by now, famous Pastry Shop in Annerly Junction.

Some of Hugh's bestsellers:

- Over The Top with Jim
- Head Over Heals
- Spies Like Us
- On the Road to Anywhere

As well as some political books:

- Joh: The Life and Political Adventures of Johannes Bjelke-Petersen
- Working For Rupert

Author Hugh Lunn addresses the History Class

Hugh and Stand-in Tutor Bryan Hoar
It was a great pleasure to listen to Hugh in person, having read most of his books over many years.

Well Done, History Class

Ukes in the Park

The Ukulele Group recently went up to Daisy Hill Forest for a concert in the park. They had a lot of fun entertaining the locals.

Kevin, the tutor writes:

"It was a great day and enjoyed by all. I was told we must do it again. Tried to get a photo of all the locals who came to watch, but the Kangaroos wouldn't stay still long enough to get captured."

F50 Mah Jong for Beginner

On Mondays, you can see a group of ladies in the library at Springwood engaged in the ancient game of Mahjong, also spelled majiang, mah jongg and numerous other variants. It is commonly played by four players (with some three-player variations found in South Korea and Japan.)

The game and its regional variants are widely played throughout Eastern and South Eastern Asia and have a small but growing following in Western countries, including Australia.

The game is played with a set of 144 tiles based on Chinese characters and symbols. It is a game of skill, strategy, and calculation and involves a degree of chance.

The group meets on Monday between 1:00pm - 2:30pm at the Logan North Library at Springwood.

If you are interested in joining this group, please contact  Angela De Hennin Tel. 3345 4485 or by Email adehennin@hotmail.com
